Swingball and Tetherball – What’s the Difference?

Classic forms of outdoor entertainment will never be complete without a Swing ball or a tetherball. Although these two have similar features, there are certain differences that help you distinguish one from another. Hence, if you are thinking of finding the best play toys for your outdoor toy collections, make sure you know what makes swingball different from tetherball. Are they actually different?

Defining Tetherball and Its Featurestetherball

Tetherball is an outdoor game, which involves two opposing players. This outdoor game originates from North America and includes certain equipment such as the stationary metal pole. The pole is attached with the ball hanging from a rope or also called the tether. The players position themselves on opposite sides of the stationary metal pole where each tries hitting the ball one direction. One player hits the ball in a clockwise direction while the other player hits it counterclockwise. Whoever manages to wind the ball around the pole and make it stop by the rope is declared the winner. One criterion is that the ball must not bounce to confirm your victory.

Defining Swing ball and Its Featuresswingball

Swing ball is also known as totem tennis and is definitely similar to tetherball. This outdoor play feature is actually more popular and played in Australia, the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand. In fact, in these countries, tetherball is actually unknown. The mechanic of this game requires softer and smaller ball which the players hit using racquets just like in tennis. It also has shorter metal poles compared to tetherball thus it is highly portable to use. The ball flies and winds around the pole but specifically at a constant distance. The ball also goes round the pole through a helical screw. To determine the winner, the ball must first reach either the top or the bottom of the screw. Whoever manages to do it first wins the game. In most packages, the ball used is a softer sponge rubber ball or an actual tennis ball. The racquets are designed just like tennis racquets but are made from hard, durable plastic.

The Bottom Line

However different these two games may be, there are many similarities – it delivers all-time fun and classic entertainment! Your outdoor activities would never be the same without this energizing game which is perfect for kids and adults alike.

3 Reasons why Swingball Is Addictive

Swingball is also known as tetherball and you could find tons of reasons why this is considered a highly addictive and enjoyable game. In the recent years, tetherball generally consists of a metal pole approximately 10 feet high and a ball that hangs by a rope. The players stand on the opposite sides of the pole, hitting the ball in opposing directions. The winner should be able to wind the ball around the pole till it becomes stationary. At present, you can find tons of brands and models of this play feature that are the best for kids and even teens and adults.

Here are three top reasons why swingball is highly preferred for outdoor entertainment for kiddos as well as the young at heart.

1. Classic, Safe Entertainment. Tetherball is considered a classic and well-loved playground game. Contemporary types include the tennis tetherball which is a mix of paddle tennis, tetherball and paddleball. Instead of using the tetherball which is usually the size of soccer ball, this set features a tennis ball that’s attached to the pole through a rope with the helical screw on top of the pole. The Best Outdoor Games for Kids

Playing almost all day outside under the sun is the most unforgettable memory many of us have. Bet you have enjoyed a lot of classic childhood games that can be played with little or no equipment at all. For those who are not familiar with those classic games, these are games that would take much of your time and is easy to play.

The happiest childhood memories are built with these outdoor games that can also be great exercise kids of any age.

Listed are some of my favorites:

  • Duck Duck Goose – In the form of a circle kids sit down side by side. The “it” walks around the circle. As he walks around, he’ll tap people’s heads and say whether they are a “duck” or a “goose”. Once someone said he is the “goose” they get up and try to chase “it” around the circle. The objective is to tap that person before they are able sit down in the “goose’s” outdoor gamesspot. If the goose is not able to do this, they become “it” for the next round and play goes on. If he taps the “it”, the person tagged has to sit in the center of the circle. Then the goose becomes “it” for the next round. The person in the middle can’t leave until another person is tagged and they are replaced.
  • Red Light Green Light – One will serves as the “stop light” and the rest try to touch him or her. If you were able to touch him first then you are the winner. To start with all the children form a line about 15 feet away from the stop light person. The stop light person faces away from the line of children and says “green light”. From here the kids are allowed to move towards the stoplight, some run, others walk and sneak too. When the stop light person calls out “red light” and turns around and any of the kids are caught moving after this has occurred then they’ll be out. This goes on until the first player to touch the stop light wins the game and earns the right to be “stop light” for the next game.
  • Stick Ball – The game is played with a baseball bat and ball and a tennis ball so we won’t break any windows. There’s no outdoor gamesneed for a team, just one person to bat and everyone else in the outfield. The person with the bat tosses the ball up and hits it. He then puts the bat on the ground in front of him or her. The person who gets the ball turns it at the bat from the place where the ball was picked up. When and if the ball hits the bat it pops up into the air. If the batter does not catch the ball, the person who rolled it is then up to bat. If someone in the field catches a hit before it touches the ground, they are automatically up to bat.

These are just a few of the fun and exciting outdoor games that you can play with your kids.  So take an adventure outdoors with your kids and invite the neighbors for some exciting outdoor games.
